SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Community members filled the Bob Keefer Center parking lot to grab a sweet treat and to support a necessary cause, in celebration of National Ice Cream Day.
The event was drive-thru style and hosted by the Springfield Utility Board and Dari Mart for their “Taste of Summer campaign."
The campaign aims to help those who need assistance paying their utility bills.
"We're encouraging people to go to their local Dari Mart,” SUB Community Relations Manager Meredith Clark said. “”If you buy a half gallon of either the Strawberries and Cream or Blueberry Cheesecake, since it's red, white and blue for July, Dari Mart will donate one dollar to Project Share. This is our energy share program, and it helps not only low-income people but people who have been affected by COVID-19 with job loss."
The free scoop was brought directly to people's cars to help limit exposure as much as possible.
The campaign has already raised thousands of dollars and will continue until the end of the month.
“Both for Dari Mart and for SUB, we are community-focused companies and organizations,” Clark said. “We are here for our community, and we want to make sure that whatever we do, gives people joy but also gives back to the community.”
The event took place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Dari Mart will be putting the two flavors on sale to help the community during this time.
