ROSEBURG, Ore. – A man is charged with murder and assault in connection with the shooting at a motel in Roseburg on Monday.

Devin Lee McNamara, 33, of Roseburg was arrested after the shooting at the Budget 16 Motel on Stephens Street. He is being held in jail on one count of second-degree murder and two counts of first-degree assault and is scheduled for arraignment Tuesday at 1:15 p.m.

Police responded to the Budget 16 Motel at 1067 NE Stephens Street in Roseburg at about 3 p.m. on Monday, after dispatchers began receiving calls about a shooting.

An investigation revealed that three people were injured during the shooting, and that a 36-year-old man died of his injuries at the scene. A 44-year-old woman and a 40-year-old woman were also shot.

The 44-year-old woman was later transported to Riverbend Hospital in Springfield, and eventually to OHSU in Portland. She is being treated for life threatening injuries at this time. The 40-year-old woman sustained significant injuries, but they are non-life-threatening.

One of the people who called 911 Monday was an off-duty Roseburg police sergeant who was at a business across the street from the motel. He stayed in contact with dispatchers regarding the shooting suspect's actions.

Police said that about 2 minutes after the shooting, the suspect crossed the street and went into the OK's Auto Supply parking lot. At that time the off-duty sergeant tackled the suspect to the ground. The suspect was restrained until on-duty police officers arrived and took him into custody.

Court documents state that McNamara told police he walked to the motel "in a rage" and fired into a group of three or four people who were in front of a motel room. The documents say that McNamra admitted to firing his gun into the group, whom he stated he did not know, from a distance of about 5 to 6 feet, before leaving the scene.

The documents say McNamara admitted to returning to his home after running out of bullets in his pistol, retrieving two rifles, and returning to the area prior to being taken into custody.
