EUGENE, Ore. -- Dozens of community members gathered at the University of Oregon on Thursday night to plot their strategy against the demolition of historic Hayward Field, with some people threatening to chain themselves to the east grandstands to stop the bulldozers.

This was the scene at Agate Hall Thursday night where a group called "Hayward Field East Grandstand Supporters" met. Some said they're upset that the university didn't ask for their opinions when designing a new, more modern facility.

Others complained about what they perceive as a lack of parking in the new design.

"I think first and foremost the University is really shirking it's duty of due diligence when they're dealing with this process, and who and how we develop the area over here at Hayward Field," said resident Shannon Sardell.

Demolition is expected to begin in the next several weeks.
