PORTLAND, Ore. -- In an unexpected move, Portland's largest newspaper endorsed the Republican candidate for governor in next month's election.

The Oregonian's editorial board chose challenger Knute Buehler over Democratic incumbent Kate Brown.

In an article posted Saturday night, the paper's editorial board cited "little vision and no urgency" from Brown during her time in office. The paper went on to slam "Brown's profound failure to lead" on issues such as K-12, career and technical education.

“This governor’s race is about leadership and competence,” said Oregon Republican party chair Bill Currier. “Kate Brown’s failure to have serious solutions to our state’s challenges and to lead has finally caught up with her.”

The Oregonian said time is running thin to address the "most pressing problems" facing the state and Oregon needs a leader who will "make the bravest of choices" and that "Brown hasn't been that leader."
