EUGENE, Ore. -- As you head to the mall or maybe online to do your holiday gift shopping this season, here is what you should know to stay safe, according to the Better Business Bureau.
The BBB said 43% of consumers start shopping in the beginning of November, and the average shopper will spend over $1,000 this holiday season. With that many people and that much money, the BBB wants to make sure we are all protected from scams.
The biggest scams occur online, especially on social media.
“Usually on the right-hand side, and those direct you to sites that are not real. And even on google, if you type something, you want to scroll down. You may find that is not a real website,” said Danielle Kane from the BBB.
What to look out for when you come across these websites is to check if they have any contact information, as well as a shipping and refund policy. You can always check on BBB.org and read reviews and ratings for that business.
“Look at the format, spelling, grammar... Is the format sloppy? Does it look like a real website?” said Kane.
When it comes to scams, the BBB usually hears that a consumer's product never showed or it is a counterfeit product. Kane said reaching out to the BBB may help.
“We have a good track record contacting the person running the website, and sometimes we get the product shipped to you or resolve it so you can get a refund," she said.
Kane also recommends to always use a credit card when buying online. That way if you never receive your product, you can contact your credit card company.
