Springfield, Ore. - The City of Springfield could throw the book at the old library and build a new state of the art facility.

The Springfield Library has been operating for the last 35 years. Staff say the facility is outdated and that makes it tough to meet the community's needs.

Emily David, the Springfield Library Director. She says the council's discussion tonight stems from a "library needs assessment" from community members and staff.

David says it showed people believe the library needs to be modernized with new technology, and more space for programming and meetings.

She says the current library is only 26 thousand square feet, which is not nearly enough for the 160 thousand visitors last year.

David says, "We are an ever more popular destination downtown, we are doing more and more programming and serving greater community needs, we're gathering space for the citizens and we've out grown this space."

She says the proposed facility would be 56 thousand square feet and would potentially be built near city hall on North 5th Street between A and B Street.

A spokesperson with the city says this process is just beginning and there is no estimate on when construction could begin or how much it would cost.
