EUGENE, Ore. -- With the weather getting warmer police are warning people to take better care of their bikes.

Police said in 2017 there were nearly 800 bikes stolen in Eugene. They recommend investing in a U-bolt style lock and a cable lock to attach to both of your bike's tires.

They also want bike owners to register their bikes to their EPD Bicycle Registration Application, which is critical in recovering and returning your bike if it is ever stolen.

Police said it is vital to keep your bike locked at all times whenever you leave it unattended.

"The critical step really is good locking practices,” Jeff Blonde, with EPD’s Crime Prevention Unit. “Not leaving your bicycle unsecure, not only when you're out somewhere. Making sure it's locked up but at home, making sure it's not left in the front yard, on a porch, in the garage with the garage door open because we see a lot of that.”

Blonde said if your bike is stolen to report it to their non-emergency line at: (541) 682-5111.
