Police: man tries to hit ex-girlfriend's boyfriend with mallet

Police say they arrested a man armed with a mallet in Eugene.

EUGENE, Ore. – Police have arrested a Eugene man accused of trying to hit his his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend with a mallet.

Officers said this happened on Monday around 5:30 p.m. at the Hirons store on 18th Aveune.

Police said Walter Rodriguez, 51, swung the mallet at the victim and punched him in the face.

They said they found Rodriguez in a car nearby. They shut down part of the area after getting a tip he had a gun.

About an hour later, police said he came out of the car and was arrested. Officers said they did not find a gun, but did find a mallet in the car.
