Police identify motorcycle officer, driver involved in Eugene crash

The officer was taken to the hospital, but their injuries were not life threatening.

EUGENE, Ore. – Police have identified the officer and driver involved in a crash in downtown Eugene Tuesday afternoon.

The motorcycle officer was Rodney Thrower, 54, police said. He has been an officer with the department for 19 years. He was taken to a hospital following the crash, which happened at 10th Avenue and Jefferson Street at about 2:30 p.m. However, his injuries were minor and he was released.

Police identified the driver who hit Thrower as Kelly Sparrow, 59, of Eugene. After the crash, police reported that the involved driver had hit the officer while making a lane change as both headed south on Jefferson Street. Sparrow was reportedly not injured.

The case has been forwarded to the Eugene Municipal Court for review and possible charges, police said.
