ROSEBURG, Ore. -- Two men were arrested in Oregon after an alleged violent, multi-state crime spree, including Attempted Aggravated Murder and Assault.

Oregon State Police said there was an attempted car-jacking at the Red Robin in Roseburg at about 5:30 Saturday night. They said the suspect (or suspects) was not able to steal it and left in his original vehicle.

Police said he left a man behind: Jose Lopez-Jovel, who'e from El Salvador. Roseburg Police arrested Lopez-Jovel for that initial criminal act and he was taken to the Douglas County Jail on warrants of fugitive from another state (Utah).

Meanwhile, police continued to pursue the other man: Matthew Anthony Fanelli, who's from New Mexico.

While pursuing him down I-5, they said Fanelli shot a firearm several times and that those bullets hit some cars. Police said they struck a Commercial Motor Vehicle, a passenger car (striking the occupied child seat inside) and an Oregon State Police patrol car disabling it.

This continued into Josephine County, where police lost him. They said Fanelli shot a man and assaulted a woman in Grants Pass while trying to steal their car, but ended up leaving in his original car again. The man was critically injured and police said his identity and status will be released at a later date.

Law Enforcement located Fanelli driving again, and that's when they said his vehicle became disabled.

Fanelli was arrested and taken to the Josephine County Jail on multiple charges.

Police said Lopez-Jovel and Fanelli are associated with a multi-state crime spree of violent criminal activity. Oregon law enforcement is working with out-of-state and federal partners for this case.

As a matter of precaution, police are asking citizens along the route of the vehicle chase and associated crime scenes to be vigilant of their surrounding area, hitchhikers, and securing of their property. Additionally, they're asking motorists traveling I-5 during the vehicle pursuit to check their vehicles for evidence of firearm damage.

This is an ongoing investigation. Police said other than the carjacking victims in the Grants Pass area, no additional injuries were reported.

Anyone with any more information is asked to call the Oregon State Police Dispatch at 1-800-442-2068.
