SPRINGFIELD, Ore. --- A 38-year-old man was taken into custody after police said he stole an SUV from Eugene and leading Springfield Police officers on a chase that ended in the City of Coburg.
Police said a black Cadillac Escalade SUV was stolen from a garage on Pioneer Pike Street in Eugene. They said the keys were inside the SUV and the thief used the remote garage door opener to escape.
They said the owner of the SUV saw their vehicle backing out of the driveway and immediately called 911.
An officer spotted the stolen SUV in Springfield and chased it. They said the suspect led police through the Mohawk area before entering Highway 126 west onto I-5 northbound.
Police said the suspect fled at speeds reaching up to 100 miles per hour before exiting near the City of Coburg. They said he put the SUV in reverse when he reached a dead end and rammed into a patrol car.
Officers said the masked man got out of the car but refused to cooperate with police. They said he ducked back into the SUV and pulled out a semi-automatic handgun before running away.
K9 Officer Falco took down the suspect just as he pointed the gun at police. The suspect began hitting Falco with his gun, according to police, but Falco bit down and squeezed the suspect's wrist eventually fracturing it and causing him to drop the gun. Police said if Falco didn't intervene when he did the situation could have been deadly.
Officers said there was a struggle with the suspect as he tried to reach for his gun that was on the ground. They believe he was high on methamphetamine. Officers had to tase the suspect who they said: "seemed to have super-human strength."
Officers were eventually able to take the man into custody. He was transported to McKenzie-Willamette Hospital where he underwent surgery for his fractured wrist.
Police are withholding the 38-year-old suspect's name because they believe he is a fugitive from another jurisdiction.
They said the man will face charges of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, assault, assaulting a police service animal, assaulting a public safety officer, resisting arrest, unlawful use of a weapon, felon in possession of a firearm, delivering a controlled substance, possession of burglary tools, and attempted aggravated murder of a police officer.
