PLEASANT HILL, Ore. – Students are celebrating the opening of a new greenhouse lab in Pleasant Hill this weekend.

The Future Farmers of America chapter worked with the high school’s agriculture program to create a state-of-the-art lab.

It will provide occupational experience in greenhouse operations and topics related to growing plants, like plant responses to light, fertilizer, seed placement, soil preparation, moisture control, disease and insect control.

They’ll also look at techniques to start and grow ornamental trees and shrubs, bedding plants, turf grass and greenhouse vegetables.

“(Kindergarten) through (twelfth grade) will be through here,” said senior Lilia Gagner. “We want to start really young with – we do ag in the classroom and we teach younger students about how agriculture affects them, so we want to start them from kindergarten in here.”

The greenhouse will also be used to host FFA career development events, landscape design, floriculture, crop selection, horticulture science poster projects, forestry and nursery development for elementary, middle and high school students.
