EUGENE, Ore. – Gov. Kate Brown held a press conference on Friday, saying the state broke its previous COVID-19 case and death records.

Today, the Oregon Health Authority added 2,176 cases and 30 deaths. The death toll has tipped over 1,000.

However, health officials said good news is on the way – the Food and Drug Administration is expected to approve two vaccines in the coming weeks, and nearly 100,000 doses will be shipped to Oregon upon approval.

Health care workers and other essential workers and those at care facilities will be among the first to get vaccinated.

Local experts will be working to confirm FDA's approval of the vaccine. On Friday, health officials did say that the vaccines are very effective and safe, reportedly completely eliminating severe symptoms even in the small number that contracted the virus.

Brown said she will get vaccinated following FDA approval of the vaccine.

Down the road when the vaccines become more widely available, Brown said she hoped the state could use it to bring students back to schools safely.

Brown urged the public to keep in mind that even though we can see the light at the end of the tunnel, we aren’t there yet, and it’s still very important to follow safety guidelines.
