Oregon Department of Transportation asks people to stop wasting resources by littering

The Oregon Department of Transportation feels they waste resources when they have to use staff to clean up litter on the highway.

EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon Department of Transportation said they feel they've spent way too many resources cleaning up litter on the highway this year, and they're asking people to be more mindful.

They said it's been especially bad this year along the I-5 and I-105 corridors, and when they appoint staff to clean up that litter they're taking people and money away from other projects.

"We're finding that we're spending a significantly larger amount of time picking up litter, and taking away from other activities that we should probably be out doing rather than picking up litter. Something that can be reduced by just being mindful," said Kevin Finch, ODOT's Travel Maintenance Manager.

Some of the locations pictured here were even cleaned up about a week ago.

Finch said they spend around $70,000 each year to do these clean ups, when they could be spending that money elsewhere.

He asks people to be more mindful about trash and to cover loads they might be carrying in an open-bed truck or similar vehicle.
