NEWPORT, Ore. -- People from all over the country participated in Bioblitzes at each of Oregon’s five marine reserves this June and July, all in the name of learning about marine wildlife. The Oregon Coast Aquarium said there was more than fifty participants at each event.

A Bioblitz is an event where participants try to find as many different species as they can in a given location.

The Oregon Coast Aquarium also said that more than 5,000 observations of more than one thousand species were recorded at Cape Perpetua during a Bioblitz, and they saw a great turnout from both locals and visitors alike.

The Oregon Coast Aquarium with partners, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Oregon Sea Grant, and Cascade Head Biosphere Reserve, hosted and promoted the Bioblitzes events.

Prior to the Bioblitzes, The Oregon Coast Aquarium partners with the Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO) trains students from OSU and volunteers to assist in the data collection.

Through the Lubchenco/Menge Lab at Oregon State University the data is collected on intertidal ecology through bird surveys, sea star and mussel transects, and snail counts.
