EUGENE, Ore. -- A Eugene police officer shot and killed a man in north Eugene early Saturday morning, officials said.

The incident happened around 12:30 a.m. in the 1400 block of Acacia Avenue, near Walmart. A police statement said it began when an officer attemted to "stop" a man, after which a fight broke out.

Police would not provide more details, including the name of the officer or the victim.

One neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous, was awoken to the sound of the gunshots right outside her home. The neighbor said backup arrived within minutes of the shooting.

"I could tell that there were police coming into the area and a man lying on the ground," the neighbor said.

Jennifer Saggaf, who lives down the street from where the shooting happened, woke up to a knock on the door from police who told her the man killed was not a resident of the neighborhood.

"He said that somebody was shot down the street and they were going house to house to ask people if they knew anything," Saggaf said.

Neighbors reported hearing between two and three gunshots.

The officer was treated for injuries and released from the hospital. The subject received emergency care but was pronounced dead.

Police have not said why the officer stopped the man, nor if the man had any weapons.

The Lane County Interagency Deadly Force Investigation Team is investigating.
