One dead in Oregon Dunes ATV crash

A passenger of an ATV died after it crashed while cresting a dune in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area.

NORTH BEND, Ore. -- A passenger of an ATV died after it crashed at the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area Saturday evening, officials said.

According to the Coos County Sheriff's Office, Celmi Lopez, 25, of Sacramento, California, was ejected from a rental Polaris XP 1000 ATV after the driver, Ivan Noriega, 27, crested the top of a dune and lost control at around 6:20 p.m.

Officials said that the vehicle flipped several times, end over end.

Lopez was not wearing a seatbelt. Her helmet was also lost in the crash. According to the sheriff's office, deputies arrived at the crash and attempted CPR at around 6:25 p.m. Lopez was soon pronounced dead.

Noriega was uninjured in the incident, officials said.
