REEDSPORT, Ore.-- A suspect in a standoff with law enforcement is dead following hours of negotiations Tuesday night.
This all started at 5:43 p.m. when Douglas County deputies conducted a traffic stop in the area of Highway 101 and Winchester Avenue. One individual was detained and the other remained in the vehicle and became hostile. Officials say the individual was armed.
The Crisis Negotiation Team negotiated with the suspect in the vehicle for several hours to try to de-escalate the situation before officials say shots were fired at 10:44 p.m. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
The name of the individual is being withheld at this time and the Douglas County Major Crimes Unit is taking over the investigation.
Neighors in the area said the person who died was a man, and that he was the passenger of the vehicle. Neighbors said law enforcement attempted to negotiate with the man for several hours, even bringing him a cell phone to let him call someone. A nearby motel and convenience store was reportedly evacuated.
Finally, before 11 p.m. neighbors reported hearing between four and six gunshots, but were unsure who fired at who.
Highway 101 fully reopened Wednesday morning.
