LANE COUNTY, Ore. -- Two mass vaccination clinics are happening in Lane County this weekend. However, they are invititation-only so Lane County Public Health will not be releasing where they are being held.

These clinics are specifically for people in groups two and three of phase 1A, which includes those who work with the unhoused, those with disabilities and in congregate settings.

Lane County Public Health is focusing on those two groups while hospitals, EMS and Walgreens hone in on groups one and four.

This is really Lane County Public Health's first effort at getting groups two and three immunized. With Nova Health and McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center both donating doses for them to use, the goal is to administer nearly 1,500 doses this weekend.

Jason Davis said there are thousands of people in groups two and three so it will take more than just this weekend to get those who are eligible vaccinated. However, these two clinics are a start.

Nova Health donated 500 doses to Lane County Public Health to use during the clinics this weekend.

Nova Health Vice President of Operations Stephanie Rhoades said once Nova Health received 1200 doses and was able to vaccinate most of their employees and some members of the 1A community, they knew they had leftovers to spare.

"We had two options. One option was to start signing up 1A individuals in the community and they would come to our clinic locations and we would track them and monitor them and they would walk into our clinics for the vaccine. The second option was for us to give it to Lane County Public Health and let them make sure the community was taken care of. So, we decided as a group that that would be the best option," Rhoades said.

McKenzie-Willamette donated 975 doses to this weekend's clinics. To date, they have received 4,500 doses from the Oregon Health Authority and after vaccinating staff who wanted to be, they knew they could afford to give out the rest.

KEZI asked the marketing director Jana Waterman how they were able to get such large amounts of the vaccine compared to Lane County Public Health, which was assigned 100 doses this week.

"I don't know why because they originally requested that we give them a number for our staff and medical staff and we did a survey to our staff and medical staff of who would want the vaccination and then we gave that number to OHA so I don't know why we continue to receive vaccinations," Waterman said.

However, she is thrilled that they are able to help vaccinate more people in the community. McKenzie-Willamette has already given out more than 1,000 first doses to their staff and 532 second doses.

Plus, they have 1,700 first and second doses scheduled out to the rest of their staff and those in the 1A group from medical clinics around the area.

Nova Health and McKenzie-Willamette said they will continue to donate the extra doses they receive. Lane County Public Health will continue putting these clinics together as supplies allow.
