CORVALLIS, Ore. -- A cougar that was labeled "aggressive" has been shot and killed near Oregon State University’s Dunn forest.

The forest, located west of Corvallis, has reopened, Oregon Fish and Wildlife officials said.

Officials said they captured a killed the cougar at about 9:45 a.m. Wednesday morning. They said it was a female cougar, weighing 75 pounds and estimated to be 1 to 2 years old.

A jogger reported an encounter with an aggressive cougar on Saturday, which caused the forest to close.

According to officials, the cougar that was killed matches the description of the cougar that followed the jogger. The cougar was said to be narrow in build but not emaciated.

The jogger reported it approached him with its ears down and his attempts to scare it away were unsuccessful. The jogger kicked the cougar, and it retreated, but when he started to run, the cougar began to chase him again. It only left when two hikers with a dog walked by, officials said.

“The agency’s priority is human safety,” ODFW watershed manager Brian Wolfer said. “We will not relocate a cougar that has shown aggressive behavior. Cougars typically avoid humans, so for the cougar to approach so close that the runner was able to kick it makes it a clear human safety threat.”

The jogger was not injured by the cougar.

Officials said hounds picked up the cougar’s scent near where the incident happened and they tracked the cougar from the forest onto a nearby property. They said they obtained permission to access the property from the landowner and treed the cougar before shooting it.

Oregon State University officials want users of the forest to remain vigilant.
