SILVERTON, Ore. -- Lightning has been determined to be the cause of the Silver Creek Fire, which officials said is more than halfway contained.

A storm that passed over the area June 18 likely started a small fire that smoldered for several weeks before emerging during a windy period with high temperature, Oregon Parks and Recreation Department officials said. Low relative humidity and drier fuels on the ground allowed the flames to grow.

The fire has burned 27 acres, officials said, but no further growth is expected. The blaze is fully lined and 55 percent contained.

Around 125 personnel remain on the fire and will continue mopping up the perimeter and removing dangerous snags.

While the ranches have reopened, the 214 trailhead and several back-country trails, Howard Creek horse camp and day-use area, and youth camp remain closed.

There are no interruptions to scheduled events, and the waterfall areas remain open to visitors during park hours. Light smoke may be visible at times, but the fire is not expected to produce heavy smoke.

No injuries or facility damage have been reported.
