SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- An officer-involved shooting on Camp Creek Road has resulted in the death of one man following a dispute between family members.

Lane County Sheriff's deputies were called to the 37000 block of Camp Creek Road north of Thurston just before 10 p.m. Monday to reports of a physical dispute.

Family members had called and said Robert Gutierrez, 59, had physically struck another family member.

Gutierrez was reported to have retrieved a gun and had fired it before deputies arrived. Other residents of the property felt they were unable to leave safely.

The initial investigation indicates that once on scene, deputies attempted to talk with Gutierrez and de-escalate the situation, but Gutierrez pointed a firearm at the deputies. One deputy fired rounds, striking Gutierrez. Despite deputies immediately administering life-saving measures, Gutierrez did not survive his injuries, the sheriff's office said.

No deputies were physically injured during the incident. The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave, as is standard protocol in deadly force incidents.
