EUGENE, Ore. – An off-duty firefighter jumped into action Tuesday morning when he saw a man clinging to a tree along the Willamette River.

This happened just before 10:30 a.m. near Valley River Center.

Eugene Springfield Fire crews said the firefighter, Jon Deininger, saw that a man had fallen into the river and was clinging to a tree limb. Deininger called 911 and then went to help.

“When he had already left, I'd asked the police officers if my firefighter was the one who had pulled him out of the river they had no idea that the citizen was an off-duty firefighter,” said Battalion Chief Markus Lay. “He hadn't told him that, he had just given the report and went on his merry way.”

The rescued man was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay.
