CORVALLIS, Ore. -- There are some Oregon State University students who weren't surprised to learn that one student tested positive for COVID-19.

"Thirty-two thousand kids go to this school," freshman Kira Kilstrom said. "So it's pretty natural that one of us would get it at some point."

A lot of students are now taking extra precautions.

"I was kind of cautious before because I realized, slowly but surely, how serious it is," senior Trenton Joyner said. "I've kind of been held in the house. I haven't really been going anywhere or seeing much of anybody, going out only when necessary, doing a lot of hand washing and sanitizing and all that stuff. Just trying doing my part to make sure that we're all protected as possible."

According to OSU Vice President Steve Clark the student was in the Corvallis community when tested on March 16. He wasn't able to confirm if the student lived on-campus.

The student self-isolated following the testing and resides outside the state of Oregon. They are no longer presenting symptoms and are reportedly doing well.

OSU residence halls will still be open during the spring term.

"From my understanding, it's very transmissible," Joyner said. "A lot of people aren't getting tested. So we have to be as cautious as possible with everyone."

Even the university bookstore has moved to solely online pickup orders. Those services are taking the necessary steps to prevent the spread of the virus around campus.

"We are doing all the precautions we can. We're sanitizing it after each customer and trying to keep all areas clean and feeling like that is at least helping us in the right direction."

The remote spring term begins Monday, March 30.
