ROSEBURG, Ore. -- The Oregon Department of Transportation is building a steel fence under the Washington Avenue bridge near downtown Roseburg in hopes of keeping homeless people away from it.
Officials said they’ve had issues with illegal camping in the area for a while.
“People are camping under the bridge, camping there and illegally starting fires,” said Dan Latham with ODOT. “Also fires under the bridge can damage the structure.”
Latham said ODOT has been putting up wired fences in recent years to keep homeless campers out. However, he said campers kept cutting through the fence.
“It’s a continuous issue and it does appear to be getting worst year by year,” said Latham.
Latham said the steel fence will be extremely difficult to break through, unlike the wired fence they’ve been using.
ODOT has been working with the City of Roseburg and private land owners to complete the project.
Latham said it will cost them nearly $17,000.
The project should be finished by next week.
