EUGENE, Ore. – The snow on Sunday may have been a pleasant surprise, but for some people in Eugene the conditions made them worried about how they would get around.

KEZI spoke with Gary Matsdorf who lives in the south west hills of Eugene. He said there are several hills you have to drive on to get to his home, which can be scary when there’s hazardous conditions.

"It gets very steep, very fast and those are the hills that make it so difficult to get up or down, if there's any snow or ice," Matsdorf said.

Last year, during the historic ice storm, Matsdorf said the hills near his home were treacherous to get up and down.

"I had a friend take me down in a four wheel drive, we spun out, I got stuck at the bottom of the hill and I had to be brought up on a snow mobile," Matsdorf said.

Angela Beers-Seydel with the Oregon Department of transportation said staff have been de-icing and sanding the roads to ensure Matsdorf and others can have a safe way to get around.

"We have extra staff come on about 4 o'clock on Saturday afternoon and they will be working through Sunday and Monday to ensure that the roads are as safe as possible," Beers-Seydel said.

She said when it comes to driving in snowy or icy conditions, there are several tips drivers should be aware of.

"Slow down, turn on your lights, take your car off cruise control, and pay attention to what's going on around you," Beers-Seydel said.

Beers-Seydel also warns drivers to have plenty of space between them and the car in front of them and to slow down and be cautious when driving on ramps and bridges.
