EUGENE, Ore. -- A new low-cost airline began service from Eugene to Southern California Wednesday.
Avelo Airlines arrived at the Eugene airport around 4:30 p.m. and was greeted with a water cannon salute.
The airline will offer daily flights leaving from Eugene to Burbank at 9:55 a.m. One-way tickets on Avelo start at $19. However other amenities, such as carry-on bags and refreshments, will cost extra.
Cathryn Stephens, acting airport director, said this route will boost the economies of both Eugene and Burbank.
"Most of it is leisure traffic right now. We know that anytime we put a point-to-point between one airport to another, you’re actually creating an economy," Stephens said. "We know it will not only source leisure travel, but also there’ll be a business spin-off from that both on the economy here and in Burbank.”
Southwest Airlines will also start service to Eugene at the end of August.
