ROSEBURG, Ore. - The Housing Assistance Council awarded NeighborWorks Umpqua with a $30,000 grant, which they plan to use to help local veterans.
The idea is to pick three to five veterans and those recipients will receive critical repairs to their personal homes. Whether it damages that need to be fixed or necessities that aren't being met, like a ramp, those needs will be met.
The veterans will be chosen with the help of several other organizations, including UCAN and the VA Medical Center.
NeighborWorks Umpqua's communication specialist, Nick Noyes, said that about 13 percent of the local population consists of veterans. Among those, 9 percent live below the poverty line, and an additional 8 percent are homeless.
“No one who’s served our country should have to live in substandard housing conditions.”
The work is expected to begin in late 2017 and finish up by summer of 2018.
