WINSTON, Ore. -- Winston residents are speaking out after a shooting left two men dead and one in custody Sunday morning.
According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, dispatchers received reports of gunfire in a residence on the 200 block of Ford Street just before 2 a.m. Another caller reported finding two men bleeding on the ground.
When officers with the Winston Police Department arrived, the two victims were found with gunshot wounds. They died at the scene.
Officials have identified the victims as Nicholas Lehman-Helmke, 24, of Winston and Benny Stallings, 31, of Roseburg. Both were known to suspect Savino DeSantiago, 34, of Winston.
Neighbors told KEZI 9 News that there was always tension between the two victims and DeSantiago.
They said the men were always fighting, both physically and verbally. However, they said DeSantiago hit his tipping point and it led him to killing the two men.
Other residents said this crime is a huge tragedy to the community.
“I think the best thing that people can do is use their brain before they act,” said John Collier, a Winston resident.
According to officials, DeSantiago also drove past a residence on Peach Street, fired through a window and then drove off. Neighbors said they believe DeSantiago was trying to kill the man who lives in that home. However, officials said no one was injured from that shooting.
