MYRTLE CREEK, Ore. – A vehicle that drove into a ditch above the Springbrook Water Treatment Plant is to blame for the diesel-related water contamination in Myrtle Creek, officials say.

A Department of Environmental Quality spokesperson said they have cleaned up the spill and are monitoring the site.

The initial report came in just after 9 a.m. on Monday and city staff tracked the source to the plant, which was shut down about an hour later.

The city has been providing three bottles of water per resident at Myrtle Creek City Hall, 207 NW Pleasant Street. Residents need to show valid proof of residency with a driver’s license or utility bill.

Results from a second round of tests are expected by 7 p.m. Tuesday. Depending on the results, the water advisory could be lifted. Officials said even if test results show acceptably low levels of diesel, there could still be a lingering taste or odor in the water system.

The Myrtle Creek Fire Department, Umpqua Research, Oregon State Fire Marshal Roseburg Team 1 Hazmat and Oregon Health Authority have assisted the city’s response.
