LANE COUNTY, Ore. -- Most trails in the Howard Buford Recreation Area will reopen Tuesday morning after a wildfire led to evacuations on Mt. Pisgah last week.

A fire burned on the southeast side of Mt. Pisgah starting Thursday, burned 51.15 acres. Officials said the fire has been put out.

Lane County officials said the fire was started accidentally during mowing meant to reduce invasive plant species in the park. Investigators said the mowing was allowed that day under the guidelines of the Industrial Fire Precaution Levels.

"The fire was an unfortunate accident and we are grateful for the rapid response of Pleasant Hill-Goshen Fire, Oregon Department of Forestry and other partners," Parks Manager Brett Henry said. "Mowing is an important part of managing invasive species such as blackberries within the park. We evaluate any restoration work happening Howard Buford Recreation Area against current fire restrictions, weather and vegetation conditions within the park."

The following trails will still be closed on Tuesday:

  • Eastern Trailhead, including the parking area
  • Trail 46 between trails 6 and 2
  • Trail 6 between the Eastern Trailhead and its junction with Trail 56

"We ask that visitors respect the trail closures in and around the burn area," Henry said. "We will need time to assess the condition of the area -- both for the safety of hikers, as well as the fire's impact on habitat."

Fire crews were at the park through the weekend, mopping up hot spots and removing hazards. The park remained closed on Monday because conditions hadn't improved enough over the weekend, according to officials. Officials said they did not know when the trails on the east side would open back up.
