Missing man found dead in North Umpqua River

The man's family have been notified.

ROSEBURG, Ore. – A missing Hillsboro man was found dead in the North Umpqua River on Wednesday, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said.

At about 6:20 p.m. on Wednesday, deputies learned Byung Su Song was missing from a home in the 4000 block of Del Rio Road. The caller reported that Song suffers from dementia.

Officers and search and rescue searched for Song with help from a REACH Air Medical helicopter.

His body was found at about 8:30 p.m. downstream from Hestness Landing, around the 3700 block of Del Rio Road. He was declared dead at the scene.

Authorities said foul play is not suspected at this time. The Douglas County Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting a death investigation.

The sheriff’s office thanked the public, volunteers, and others who assisted in the search.
