MOUNT. JEFFERSON, Ore. – The body of Riley Zickel, a 21-year-old hiker that went missing in 2016 during a solo hike in the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness Area, was recovered Tuesday.

Marion County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue partnered with Corvallis Mountain Rescue, the Civil Air Patrol, and the United States Forest Service after climbers contacted officials saying they had located Zickel’s body in a glacial area above Jefferson Park on Mt. Jefferson.

Back when Zickel was originally reported missing, search and rescue operations went on for seven days until efforts were suspended on Aug. 6, 2016, after the sheriff’s office said it was exhausting all available leads.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said recovering the body was extremely challenging because the area where Zickel’s body was found is extremely steep with loose rocks and rock avalanches.

Riley Zickel’s father, Robin Zickel, was present at the trailhead Tuesday when searchers brought his son’s body out of the Jefferson Wilderness Area.
