McKenzie River reopens after oil spill

The Hayden Bridge boat ramp will remain closed until further notice.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- A stretch of oil-polluted water on the McKenzie River is reopened to boat traffic.

Lane County officials said the floating barriers that were part of an oil spill cleanup are mostly gone and the river is now passable for boats. Some equipment remains in the water, however, so boaters are urged to be extra cautious.

The Bellinger and Hendricks Bridge boat ramps will reopen Friday morning at 9 o'clock. The Hayden Bridge boat ramp will stay closed until further notice.

This all stems from hundreds of gallons of oil that spilled from International Paper's Springfield facility on March 13.
