EUGENE, Ore. – City councilors have taken another step forward to bringing ridesharing back to Eugene.
The city council voted unanimously on Wednesday to hold a public hearing about their new approach to companies like Uber and Lyft.

City staff said the new proposal focuses on keeping the community safe by making sure all drivers are insured, requiring driver certification and background checks, and ensuring all vehicles are in good working condition with an inspection.

Mayor Lucy Vinis said the city has done the research and hopes these changes will make for a safer community.
“We're particularly concerned about college students getting back and forth late at night,” Vinis said. “We want to make sure that we have a safe system and so we don't want to trade one unsafe situation for another.”
Vinis expects the public hearing to happen within a couple months and hopes to have rideshare programs back in Eugene as soon as this summer.
The last time a rideshare program operated in the city was in 2014 with Uber.
