EUGENE, Ore.-- Eugene Police arrested 31-year-old Joshua Cates for allegedly stabbing a man while wearing a Halloween mask.

This incident happened Friday night around 5:40 p.m. on the 800 block of Candlelight Drive.

Police said when they arrived they found a 45-year-old male victim injured with a non-life threatening stab wound.

This began when Cates followed a woman to her home, police said.

They said a woman had parked her car and had the door propped open to get out. Shortly after, Cates allegedly attacked her and attempted to pull her into the car.

The woman reportedly attempted to fight him off and was helped by a male babysitter inside the home. Police said the babysitter was able to get Cates off the woman but was stabbed during the interaction.

Cates then reportedly ran off and the stabbed victim ran after him.

Police said the victim and a neighbor went to look for Cates in the neighbor's car. But they reportedly drove back home after becoming aware of the stab wound.

A K9 unit was called out to search for Cates but was unable to find him. Eventually, the Violent Crimes Unit were able to identify Cates from the evidence left at scene.

Police found Cates a short time later before 11 p.m. on the 3500 block of Village Avenue off of Bailey Hill. They said he was in the back of a car of someone known to him.

Cates is currently lodged in Lane County Jail facing charges of first degree robbery, second degree assault and coercion.

This is not the first time Cates has been in trouble with the law. Court records show Cates was found guilty on one count of sexual abuse in 2016 after making sexual contact with a girl who was younger than 14-years-old.

People who live in the neighborhood said it's normally a safe area and incidents like this one are uncommon.

"I don't know another time where something like this has happened," Jason Hiner said.

Other people who live nearby said they're now considering taking extra safety precautions.

"It spurred some conversation between my wife and I to get the security system we've been talking about and make sure she's got mace on her key ring," a man named Eric said.
