SALEM, Ore. – A Marion County Sheriff’s deputy has been reassigned after he was caught on camera repeatedly punching a suspect in the head.

Deputy Jake Thompson has been temporarily reassigned to a non-patrol position as the sheriff’s office conducts a use of force investigation.

Kevin Straw was punched in the head at least 14 times as he was arrested Monday near Detroit Lake. The incident was caught on camera by KGW.

Straw, whose last known address was in Scio, was arrested as deputies were searching for missing fishermen in the area. They said he was making so much noise that rescuers couldn’t hear their own radios.

Deputies said he refused to leave when asked, and that’s when they took him into custody. They also reported finding a large knife on him.

Shaw has a criminal background that includes harassment and assault.
