“We try to make recommendations for local businesses, try to direct business to local restaurants. We try to make recommend where people stay when they come from out of town. We want to recommend lodging that is green certified. Transportation-wise, we try to recommend different transportation around town,” says Denise Silfee, Eugene Marathon Volunteer Coordinator.
The marathon is also working to reduce its impact on the environment.
“We are trying to use less single-use trash items. So one of the big things we did in 2016, the first year we were certified is we are giving all runners at the end of the race a reusable water bottle that is prefilled. So instead of a plastic water bottle that is just going to get thrown away, we are sending off every runner with a water bottle they can keep and hopefully reuse in the future,” Silfee said.
Race director Richard Maher says it is important to make a positive impact on the community and environment.
“Well it's part of our mission, to be a green event, and this gave us structure to get different classifications. So it was important in that way. So we are very proud to be a green event and moving even greener,” Maher said.
There is still one thing coordinators at the Eugene Marathon are trying to figure out.
“How do you provide runners with what they need while also trying to trash. So a cupless marathon is kind of our goal, but I’m not quite sure how we're going to get there yet,” Silfee said.
