Mapleton residents seek answers after receiving sky-high water bills

In a letter sent to customers, Mapleton Water District officials said the actual monthly amount has not been calculated correctly.

MAPLETON, Ore. --- Hundreds of Mapleton residents are demanding accountability after they received higher than normal water bills. They claim that this is a direct result of negligence within the Mapleton Water District.

In a letter sent to customers, Mapleton Water District officials said the “actual monthly amount has not been calculated correctly.” The statement went on to say that they had an issue with the water meter readers.

Residents allege the meter readers have not been doing their job properly for the past ten months.

In addition, residents claim that their water was undrinkable due to an equipment malfunction during six of those ten months.

Nancy Pettibond received a $710 bill for the month of February compared to her usual $50 bill. 

“There’s no apology, there’s nothing. Just here...make payments. You owe us this amount of water. It's frustrating,” Pettibond said.

She also said this is not the first time the Mapleton Water District made a mistake with her billing.

In the letter, officials said community members can reach out to them for answers and solutions. However several residents said every time they try to call the office and demand answers they are not able to get through.  

KEZI 9 News has reached out to the Mapleton Water District for comment but has yet to hear back.
