EUGENE, Ore. -- A man pulled out knives while attempting to rob the Fred Meyer on West 11th Avenue Monday night, Eugene police said.

Michael Blair Uhrich, 36, was captured near Bailey Hill Road and West 5th Avenue as he ran through wetlands. Uhrich was charged with first-degree robbery and warrants.

Police told KEZI 9 News Uhrich attempted to steal merchandise and was caught by loss prevention employees at the store.

The employees surrendered and the man ran out the front doors to a nearby field. EPD responded at 7:45 p.m. and searched the field for less than an hour before multiple K-9 units took over to end the search. EPD says this could have all been avoided.

"Unfortunately, when you arm yourself or threaten the use of an arm -- that takes it up to a felony,” said Eugene Police Sergeant Gregg Mangus. ”So it takes something from pretty minor offense to a very serious offense in very short order."
