SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – A man is in custody after a shooting at a Springfield apartment complex.
According to Springfield police, the shooting happened at around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday at Centennial Apartments. Neighbors reported hearing shots fired.
They said three people inside the apartment were shot and taken to the hospital. Police said one person was shot in the neck, another in the chest, and a third one in the chest.
Jungie Xu is a neighbor who lives in the same unit and said he heard everything from his room.
"First I heard a shot and then I heard a woman screaming you shot him, then I heard a male voice groaning," said Jungie Xu. "Then I heard a series of shots. I didn't count exactly, but it could be anywhere from four to five shots."
Xu said he also heard voices coming from the apartment calling for help.
He was not the only one who heard people calling for help.
Tiah Wickwire said she was at her boyfriend's house, who lives on M Street when she also heard the shots fired.
"Somebody came running down the street screaming...Help! Help!" she said. "Then another guy came out after a while and he had a gunshot wound on his neck," she said.
Police said it appeared the suspect opened fire inside the apartment on the second floor. When they arrived they found two people injured near the stairwell, asking for help. Officers then forced their way into the room, where they found the suspect.
Police said the suspect had a semi-automatic handgun.
It took four officers to take the suspect into custody, according to police. They also said they believe the suspect may potentially have some mental health issues.
Police said there is no threat to the public.
The condition of those injured is still unknown, but police said two of them could be facing life-threatening injuries.
The investigation is ongoing.
