ROSEBURG, Ore.—A cow ran loose in Roseburg Thursday morning, prompting sheriff's deputies to shoot it dead.

Officials said the animal escaped its trailer as the owner was driving through downtown around 5:45 a.m. The cow made its way to the Roseburg High School parking lot and appeared to be heading toward I-5.

That's when the owner, fearing a crash, asked law enforcement to shoot the animal.
