VENETA, Ore. – Many are excited to welcome the New Year and start setting off fireworks.

Lieutenant Tressa Miller with Lane Fire Authority said last year they responded to two firework related incidents.

She said their goal this year is to not respond to any, but unfortunately that is not always the case.

Miller said the most common calls they respond to are of children who get injured while playing with fireworks.

She said injuries like these could be prevented by taking the appropriate safety measures.

She said it’s equally important to have a water bucket and a bucket of sand handy in case something were to go wrong.

“I understand parents are going to have their children hold the sparklers,” said Miller. “These are not things that you play with.”
Miller said if you are planning on setting off illegal fireworks you will be fined.

She said if you happen to find yourself in an emergency situation you should call 9-1-1 immediately.
