EUGENE, Ore. -- From power outages and downed trees to small communities cut off from the outside world for days on end, last week’s snowstorm pushed many to their limits. And the next disaster could happen at any time.

Carisa Hettich with the American Red Cross said there is no time like right now to get prepared for whatever else mother nature brings us next.

“As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and so we encourage people to have at least a two-week supply of food and have your cars prepared and have your cars winterized,” Hettich said.

Doug Herman, who lives in the South Hills of Eugene, said during the winter storm he and his wife lost power and they didn’t leave their home for almost an entire week. Thanks to their wood stove, Herman said they were able to make soup and stay warm. But he’s just bought a hand-crank radio, and he’s looking into buying more necessities -- batteries, food and water.

“What it made us realize is that were we to have say an earthquake, we wouldn’t be able to get down to town and people wouldn’t be able to get up here,” Herman said.

Hettich said as the snow from the storm melts, other people have been reaching out to them to see what they need to do to get prepared.
