MAPLETON, Ore. -- Several large brush fires broke out near the small town of Mapleton Sunday afternoon, prompting a response on the ground and in the air, including evacuations.
There is a concern that the fires could merge.
According to Chief Michael Schick of the Western Lane Ambulance District, as of around 6:45 p.m., the fire was at around 300 acres. Due to the rugged landscape, crews cannot put containment lines around the blaze.
Schick said that firefighters have largely been dependent on air resources, and are using retardant in an attempt to suppress the fire. There is no word yet on containment levels.
According to officials, a Level 3 Evacuation Notice has been posted on Hadsall Creek Road, meaning all residents should evacuate. Schick said that firefighters are there protecting the homes, though air resources have been unable to reach the structures.
There is a Level 2 Evacuation Notice for Sweet Creek Road. Residents should be ready to leave at a moment's notice.
Schick said that evacuees are being directed to Mapleton High School as well as Siuslaw Middle School in Florence.
