EUGENE, Ore. -- Officials at Lane County Public Health have declared an outbreak of "flu-like symptoms" at a Bethel school.

Jason Davis, a spokesman with the department, said both influenza A and B were discovered at Irving Elementary School, 3200 Hyacinth St.

He said the official declaration of an outbreak of flu-like symptoms was made on Tuesday. Absenteeism was 12% on Tuesday, which is Lane County's threshold for being able to declare an outbreak, district spokesman Pat McGillivray said.

By declaring an outbreak, the school can use more resources from Lane County Public Health to help inform staff, parents and students. Not all absent students had the flu, McGillivray said. On Thursday, the absent rate was 9%.

Parker Ashford, a second-grader at the school, died Jan. 16 after experiencing flu-like symptoms and chest pain. The cause of his death has yet to be determined by the medical examiner.
