Cliff Harrold appointed Lane County sheriff

Harrold will be taking over after Byron Trapp retires on April 16.

LANE COUNTY, Ore. -- In a unanimous decision, the Lane County Board of Commissioners appointed Chief Deputy Cliff Harrold the next sheriff of Lane County, effective on April 16.

Harrold will take over for Sheriff Byron Trapp, who is retiring.

"I am humbled and honored by this opportunity," Harrold said. "I have worked side by side with the men and women of the Lane County Sheriff's Office for 28 years and look forward to continuing to serve our community together."

Commissioners said they valued Harrold's commitment to the community and his hope to find solutions for the mental health needs in the county.

Harrold will need to run for election to continue serving as sheriff, officials said.

Commissioners also interviewed Edward O. Ethell, a retired police chief.
