EUGENE, Ore. – Local governments will consider declaring emergencies as more and more novel coronavirus cases are announced in Oregon.

So far, Lane County has had no positive cases, officials said Monday morning. A total of 45 tests have been ordered and 10 are still pending.

Lane County Public Health had a press conference Monday morning and Jason Davis said they are expecting the number of positive cases to change.

An emergency declaration would increase the amount of state and federal resources to respond to the virus, officials said. It would also let agencies create new policies and work with vulnerable populations and businesses.

Monday night, Springfield City Council will be considering making a declaration, and then Tuesday, the Lane County Board of Commissioners and Eugene City Council will do the same.

County officials said these meetings are open to the public, but people should take preventative measures such as social distancing. Recordings will be available at a later time.

Lane County will also be posting a damage assessment form for businesses to fill out so they can assess the economic damage with hopes of receiving federal reimbursement, though no assistance is guaranteed.
