LANE COUNTY, Ore. -- The Lane County Sheriff’s Office is holding a fundraiser for their newest employee -- a 20-month-old Belgian Malinois named Hektor -- at Papa's Pizza on Coburg Road Wednesday to help cover training costs.

Hektor and his handler, Deputy Raymond May, are preparing to go through weeks of training to be certified as a K-9 team. The training will cost $4,500.

K-9 dogs use their keen sense of smell to help find suspects, search for evidence and find missing people.

Hektor is replacing his father, Frits, who is getting ready to retire.

“(Frits) lives with me now, but he’s going to become more, he’s not a house dog yet. I can’t trust him. He tears everything up that he gets into, but we’re going to start our training program inside the house to where he can start living inside the house and then can start to enjoy his retirement like my last dog did,” said Todd Olson, Sheriff Senior K-9 Handler.
