EUGENE, Ore. – Lane Transit District is laying off staff in wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

General Manager Aurora Jackson said the crisis has had a big impact on payroll taxes, fares, and group pass revenues that fund their operating budget.

Fourteen members of the administrative staff have been laid off effective May 22.

All remaining employees will take scheduled furlough days once a month, and the district is looking into other ways to cut costs, the announcement said.

LTD plans to use the one-time CARES Act funding to help with expected budget shortfalls over the next few years – including a projected $17 million shortfall for the current fiscal year and for fiscal year 2021.

Jackson said they expect unemployment will remain high for an extended period of time. Payroll taxes make up $38 million of LTD’s $55 million operating budget for 2019-2020.
